DATES: O/A JULY 8, 2019 – AUGUST 8, 2019 LOCATION: NEW YORK SYNOPSIS: Mississippi the Musical is a mixed race, gothic tale of a troubled white girl, Kitten, acknowledging her racism, evolving and embracing the reality that change is required of her and everyone in Hope River.
SEEKING:
KITTEN - Caucasian 19 years old; Pretty, smart and sassy. Incest survivor. Has an imaginary friend that she calls “Buttons”. Leaves Hope River to escape her abusive home and Jim Crow prejudices. Vocal Range: Mezzo -Soprano Country Style (in the style of Faith Hill)
TOBY - Caucasian 20 years old; Handsome and well dressed. He is trapped by the traditions of racial prejudices. Voice range: tenor (in the style of Chris Stapleton) moves well
JUSTINE - African American early - mid 20s. Sexy and world weary. Works as a maid in the Deacon’s home. Voice range: Alto (in the style of Dinah Washington)
MOSES - African American 30 – 40 years old. He is wise and sincere – A ladies man. Owns the local juke joint. Voice range: Bass/Baritone bluesy voice (in the style of Levi Stubbs)
LUTHER - African American 50 years old. Preacher and Civil Rights leader in Hope River. Voice range: Tenor with a soulful powerful voice. (in the style of Little Richard)
HATTIE - African American 18 years old; Justine’s younger sister. Works as a maid in the Deacon’s home. Voice range: Second Soprano (in the style of Billie Holiday)
MR. FRANK - Caucasian 40-50 years old. Has a menacing presence and a sick, perverted laugh. Voice range: Bass, moves well (in the style of Johnny Cash)
GUSSY - African American 50 - 60 years old. The cook at the Deacon’s home. She is a widow and a mother who has lost her 14 year old son to a lynching. Radiates love. Voice range: Mezzo - Soprano with a strong Gospel belt (in the style of Mahalia Jackson)
